AFRICA: Tunisia, leader despite all

CROWN. Sacred continental champions at home early this year, the Eagles of Carthage have offered two distinct faces in 2004. Upon arrival, they had very little ahead of Morocco, who are  more regular...

It only lasted a month, but at the time to distinguish the forty countries that took part in international matches in 2004, the finals of the African Cup of Nations takes, obviously  all its importance. Real Himalaya of 2004, a year divided on two (the second half was devoted to the combined playoffs World Cup-Africa Cup 2006) CAN in Tunisia has obviously helped to locate forces. But it has not prevented the emergence of nations deprived of this final phase ...

1- After two years of looking for the best formula for the collective tactics, Roger Lemerre has been the major architect of the coronation of Tunisia on February 14th. In faultless done throughout the race, however, over a period more difficult. Friendly matches dull, sometimes, and then, one early campaign frankly laborious in the playoffs for World Cup (two draws, and  a loss in Guinea to a modest victory over Botswana). In short, the champions of Africa as have never found a second wind. The copy made remains satisfying, since Tunisia is still in the race for World Cup 2006.

2– And if Khaled Fouhami, the goalkeeper of Morocco, had not released the ball at the final of the CAN ... Without doubt, the classification of such an assessment would have been changed, and the Atlas Lions would have become first. Under the direction of Badou Zaki, best African player in 1986 who became one of the best coachs of the continent, Morocco has found a soul. Overwhelmed by some of the Moroccan media, his choice of tactics and players questioned, Zaki has remained faithfull to his principles. And his Morocco has become a machine to win matches. Placed under the authority of the still young captain Noureddine naybet, Jaouad Zairi, Youssef Mokhtari, Moha and Youssef Hadji gave a show of quality, rigor, combining defensive and offensive talent. And "Oussoud Al Atlas", the Lions of Morocco, continued to gain momentum during the 2006 World Cup playoffs. They swore to be ahead before Tunisia, which took from them a continental coronation. In 2005, the battle of the super-powers of the Maghreb will see new episodes ...

3- They do it again each time ! the "Super Eagles" of Nigeria! Deleted, stuttering, borrowed but effective in playoffs, the odd-numbered years, and sure of themselves, shining (new) talents in the years of CAN, as the protected of Christian Chukwu appeared. Led by their maestro Jay Jay Okocha - voted best player of the CAN - they finished bronze medal, leaving us an excellent impression. Next? Between friendly matches stamped FIFA delivered by novices, and the first leg prelims of the 2006 World Cup, they have blown hot and cold. Affecting the same substance in Angola in June (0-1), after a very trying season for their army of pros. Regardless, they have returned to a standard worthy of the value of this group. But attention to relapse ...

4- They are no doubt the next super power of African football. Without the final stage of CAN, which they were deprived of accuracy in 2003 by South Africa, there is no doubt that the Elephants of Ivory Coast could hold one of the first two places. The group assembled patiently by Robert Nouzaret, and then by Henri Michel, has attracted during the 2006 playoffs CM. Despite the terrible loss of their assistant coach Mama Ouattara, who died last summer, Didier Drogba's teammates have stayed in the course, although with beeing morally affected. If they have started good to accumulate the World Cup and CAN in 2006, continuing to gain momentum, the Elephants expect of course a return to normal progress in their countries, allowing them to pursue their dreams. Indeed not easy to focus on a such a high goal, given that they know how is the people suffering. But the strength of this group is precisely it's unity. It hard from now for Cameroon or Egypt, other members of the "group of death" in the playoffs CM 2006, to pick up points in the cauldron of "Felicia" in Abidjan. So, anpther little work ...

5- Like the Ivorians, the "Palanca Negras" of Angola have not played the last CAN, but have accumulated performance quality. A mid-term review of the World Cup playoffs, even Angolans remain the last undefeated team with Morocco ! Winners of the COSAFA Cup, they have recovered the title of number one nation in southern Africa, a regional crown challenged by South Africa and Zambia. Led by its striker Fabricio Akwa, training led by Luis Gonçalves delivers incredible duel for Nigeria. It could be one of the great sensations of 2005 ...

6- Quarter finals of the CAN, provisional leader of the group in World Cup 2006 playoffs before Tunisia and Morocco, The guinean National Sily has undoubtedly achieved its best year for ages. The presence of veteran 'Titi' Camara, at first, then the exceptional form of the captain Pascal Feindouno allowed them to come and disrupt the hierarchy. Their setback in Kenya was just an accident or a sign of a downturn?

7- And one surprise, just one ! Libyan team led by the playmaker Tarek Ettayeb is currently the only one to follow the train of hell led by Ivory Coast in the World cup 2006 playoffs. Perhaps, a final phase of CAN is the end, this team didn't play one since 1982 ... at home!

8- Inspired by their new leader, Sheyi Adebayor (Monaco), the Eperviers of Togo have regained their appetite. Suddenly, they are sowing terror in their group, as Senegal didn't pay attention to them. Coached by Stephen Keshi, who knew a regular success with Nigeria, they were defeated by only Zambia.

9- Far from their state of grace for the last three years, Senegal made some progress in 2004, thanks mainly to its position as the quarter-final of CAN. For the rest, the team coached Guy Stephan remain in contention for the World Cup, but face competition from Togo and Zambia.

10- Perhaps the decline in the most surprising of the year. Semi-finalists of the CAN, Eagles of Mali went back in defeat, losing this summer all the credit in their Tunisian trip. Result, multiple coaching changes, and a dangerous situation in their group in the playoffs. If they want to play the next CAN, The teammates of Mahamadou Diarra "Djilas" are doomed to exploit.

11- Eternal kings of the friendly matches, the Pharaohs of Egypt have not surpassed the first round of the CAN. And yet, there is potential. If they are included in the World Cup playoffs, they suffered a cruel defeat in Alexandria by the Ivory Coast. Will they recover, under the thumb of the interim Hassan Shehata? For now, qualification for Germany seems very unlikely ...

12- What happened to the older Cameroon, our number one in 2003? The Indomitable Lions have literally sunk after a first round of CAN "dummy", results in trompe-l'oeil. Today, Samuel Eto'o Fils and his compatriots are no longer a source of fear, and the victory against the Ivory Coast (2-0) in World Cup 2006 playoffs does only slow their fall. Defeated in Egypt, it is unclear how they will fill their four points difference with the Ivorian Elephants ...

13- Zambia begins its next return, under the direction of his coach-player Kalusha Bwalya (41 years). The hope is permitted.

Behind this selection, Algeria (15th) has lost much of its superb. The potential is not short like Fennecs have shown rising in the last quarter of CAN. But later, the teammates of Yazid Mansouri have failed to win any match in ten months. Disturbing, especially since they are not allowed to make mistakes to participate in the CAN 2006 in Egypt ... Another disappointment, South Africa (16th), inglorious exit in the first round of the CAN, which attempts to find its superb in World Cup playoffs. There's not too much trouble. DR Congo (17th) and Kenya (18th) are among the rising forces, but the gap is still important to hope to compete with continental cream. Claude Le Roy is working in Kinshasa, and keep the head of the group of South Africa in éplayoffs. Kenya is still looking fot itself. Burkina Faso (20th) has fallen, following a flat CAN, while Ghana (21st), who wrestles with the coachs, is convalescent. Second in their pool of World Cup 2006 playoffs, They have a hope in the CAN 2006. Behind Gabon (22nd), which also seeks a place in CAN, Ethiopia (23rd) finished the year with a victory at home in the East-Africa Cup. Promessing Force still ignored, Cape Verde (25th) dreams awake of a CAN. With the "selecao Crioulo, an ambushed can be in their pool of World Cup 2006 playoffs.. One last word on Benin, the host country of the CAN juniors, who literally dragged to the depths of the ranking (29th) despite its CAN. The hope may come from the generation of 20 years old... Finally, a wish of a good year of 2005 for Liberia (34th and last), an orphan for two years of his boss George Weah.
